Commentary by Kevin McShane

Fresh off my knee injury, and with the “Love Triangle” storyline a complete flop, I tried a number of things in the fall of my sophomore year to make Toupydoops connect with my fellow Obies.

One of the more popular strips in the Oberlin Review at the time was called Black and White World. Mostly an op-ed strip, it was nevertheless quite a bit more successful than Toupy. Mostly because of its “Obie-centric” humor (i.e. jokes by and about specific Oberlin students and faculty that didn’t play to anyone outside of campus).

So in an attempt to try and take some of the attention that Black and White World had, I tried to infuse some “Obie-centric” humor into Toupy. This strip was my first and most blatant attempt.

Needless to say, I didn’t try it too often after this.
